MPC Model kits: 22” Space:1999 Eagle update #3
At this point we are about half way through our series on the new MPC Space:1999 Eagle transporter. So far we’ve covered some of the kit features and the prototyping process.
Since approving the digital mockup, I’ve been presented with a tool plan and layouts, which have since been reviewed and approved. The tool plan is basically a listing of every part in the kit. It shows which tool they will land on, how many copies of the part are on the tool and how many times a given tool will need to be injected. At last count, we were in the neighborhood of 320 total parts in the kit! With all that done and all parts accounted for, the tooling process has begun. I expect to see test shots in early September!
Next, a look behind the curtain at packaging and instructions…
keep up the excellent work….I have 1 on preorder, thinking on other one too
Is the any chance on getting extra pods to paint all 3 colors
versions
Sorry, but we have no plans to sell pods separately.
That is a good idea and you should look into it if the kit is popular and makes money. A separate pod set would be cool. A nice way to further customize the kit.
This kit gets better and better.
My favorite model company!
Looking great!
I notice the spine is in multiple parts. How are the cross bars going to attach?
Also I’m assuming you guy are happy with the strength of the spine? Cause I’m probably going to be flying mine around the room, and it would be sad to see a 55 year old cry if it breaks! 🙂
Thanks for putting the sprue attach point on the back of the command module! That’s a nice touch.
Thanks for the update.
Mark
The spine should be fine as long as the parts are properly glued with modeling cement (as opposed to CA or something like that). We paid close attention to make sure the cross bars attach with minimal fuss and make sure they look solid when assembled. The attachment points lower on the pod should ensure it’s… flightworthiness. 🙂
Thanks Jamie!
Cool! I just love Space 1999. Moonbase Alpha, Eagles, etc. Keep up the wonderful work! Love your pics. Edouard (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
I have a question regarding the spine sides being in two sections. Is this to prevent warping of the parts, or is it a matter of tooling space available?
At this stage of the project, is it defined if the decal sheets will include markings for different ”paint jobs” of the studio model, including markings for Year 2? That would be a great feature of the kit!
We’ll include a few extra markings on the decal sheet, but we are primarily sticking to the look of the model as it appeared early in season 1. We’ll change up the decals when we do subsequent issues down the road.
Too Cool Jamie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
