Star Trek Model Kits: 1:2500 scale Enterprise Box Set

posted by JamieH 2:44 PM

Here’s a quick update on another exciting Star Trek kit that should be arriving on hobby store shelves before summer. The U.S.S. Enterprise Box Set should arrive on store shelves in April.

This set features snap-together kits of all seven ships from Enterprise to The Original Series and on through Star Trek: Nemesis. The NX-01 is all-new for this release for the first time in 1/2500 scale. Display bases are included for every ship in the set. One last minute change from our previous announcements about the set is that instead of pressure sensitive decals, such as those that come in Gundam figures, we will now include standard water-slide decals for every ship. The decals come on five large sheets that are packed edge to edge with technical markings as well as aztec paneling. Each ship comes molded in its appropriate base color leaving only a few spots of paint to be needed for completists.

In an upcoming blog I’ll feature our new 22″ Eagle with cargo pod and touch on the packaging for that to lead up to a full reveal of the new kit’s packaging.

Coming off the Shelf – A Classic Little Import

As we head into spring, it’s time to start thinking about something sporty. Something fun. Something, imported? AMT is proud to announce that it will be bringing back the Datsun 280 ZX Turbo this spring. Featuring a detailed turbo charged engine, t-tops,  and “snowflake” wheels, this kit’s simplistic styling never grows old. The packaging includes all new detailing photos to better assist the builder with “making it real”. Speaking of which, being the real car was offered in more than one color, we decided to have it molded in white!  So builders will have a better base to start with – when it comes to picking that right color for your 280 ZX. Cause sometimes… black may not be what you’re looking for.

So keep a lookout for this sleek little beauty. Headed to a hobby store near you (or online), in all it’s 1/25 scale style, later this spring. Gold stripes included.

It’s great fun and a privilege to be stewards of the AMT and MPC brands. While it can be a real challenge to piece some of the old tooling back together, to recreate an “early” release, it’s very satisfying when the end product presents the way you want it to. The recent Gas Man ’49 Ford release was a bit of a hybrid. There was never a box with the Gas Man drag car on the face of it. The illustration always appeared on the side. It was modeling enthusiast and all around good guy, Don Banes, who suggested the idea (years ago actually) of putting it on the face of the box and we couldn’t agree more. Having the opportunity to work with veteran AMT artist Don Greer to recreate the painting and making it all happen was incredibly cool. However, and to the point of this post, it’s just as rewarding to see someone build these cool kits! We just happened to get photos yesterday of a groovy GAS MAN build from mad-man modeler (and Kool Kat) Todd Sargis. What can we say, we LOVE it!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all, and may you receive a model kit instead of chocolate from your sweetheart. (Or both!)

Welcome to 2017! The kats here at AMT are kicking off the new year with a snappy NEW item. The 2017 Camaro SS 1LE snap kit. This simple, yet eye-pleasing model kit is chalked full of curb appeal details including: new 1LE parts, a pad printed clear window unit, highly detailed decals and stickers, a super-detailed chassis, and is molded in 3 colors PLUS clear to give it a nice “finished look” with little effort. And with the option to use water release decals or the easy-to-apply stickers, this engine-free kit offers just the right amount of challenges for moderately skilled builders all the way down to those who are just getting started in the hobby. With solidly built results and easy-rolling wheels, you could say that it would make a great starter kit for younger modelers to build with their parents, uncles, aunts or whoever. And to us, that sounds like a great way to build the hobby!

So keep a look out for the snappy Camaro SS 1LE snap kit, coming soon for your building enjoyment!

When Don Garlits proved that the rear engine AA Top Fuel setup was the way of the future, it didn’t take long for everyone else to follow suit. However, when Don “The Snake” Prudhomme decided to build a rear engine car, he went one step further and created one of the more unusual Top Fuel cars of the 1970’s. His way-out wedge design attempted to add additional downforce with a lightweight, magnesium “wedge” body section coupled with a long 220 inch wheelbase. While the setup was great in theory, setting decent initial E.T’s, it proved to be slower than Prudhomme had hoped and the car eventually shed the wedge for a more traditional rear engine dragster body.

When we retooled AMT’s Flying Wedge Dragster last year, we took the opportunity to tool an additional wedge body to match Prudhomme’s car. His had some variations like the vents on the cowling behind the engine, in addition that during the testing process of the real car, the exhaust openings were covered as the headers were re-routed to under the wedge itself.

We’ve tooled new optional under-body headers, and the flat panels that covered the original thru-body header ports. You have the option to build the car as it was originally configured, or as setup later. We’ve also tooled an optional push bar setup, as that also changed during the course of the car’s run.

We’re really excited about this release and the kit will feature accurate and complete decals, a photo booklet with fantastic photos from legendary drag photographer Steve Reyes, plus an all-new painting by one of the AMT’s original Kats, Don Greer!

Racing down the track this month from AMT is the 1/25 scale 1964 Dodge 330 Color Me Gone. A historic car in drag racing lore, the 1964 Dodge 330 Color Me GONE was built and driven by Chrysler transmission lab tech Roger Lindamood. Implanted with a 426 big block, the car could hit a 12 second quarter mile. AMT puts this kit on the starting line. It features white, clear and chrome parts with rubber tires. An illustrated instruction sheet assists assembly and a full color decal sheet rounds out the product.

  • 1/25 scale, skill 2, paint & cement required
  • Iconic drag racer
  • Authentic detail inside and out
  • Opening hood
  • White, chrome and clear parts
  • Goodyear drag slick rubber tires
  • Full-color Cartograf decals
  • SPECIAL FEATURE: Newly tooled Torq Thrust racing rims, stock steel rims, hubcaps, and multiple hood scoop options!

Coming off the Shelf – Here’s to the New Year!

new-years-banner

Another  year has come and gone. I know, hard to believe, right? I’ve covered many of our 2016 model kit releases including; Super Bosses, Blazing Bisons, Corvette Convertibles, Ice Cream Trucks, Grand Slams and more, and will continue to do so through 2017.

As noted in the initial Coming off the Shelf post back on March 29th, we do what we do because Round 2 truly cares about the model kit culture. Where it’s been, where it is now, and where it’s going. We do this, in hope of giving all the faithful, veteran modelers out there a chance to relive their past experiences. To build what once was. To be young again. And to all the younger modelers out there, it’s an opportunity to build the same kits your father, or even your grandfather, built many years ago. The heart of what we do is take vintage kits that have been shelved for years, even decades, pull them “off the shelf”, then re-release them as accurately as possible (with added goodies)–for ALL modelers to enjoy. In other words, we’re into nostalgia.

So, in light of that, here’s to you, the classic modeler, and new modelers too. May you all have an incredible New Year, filled with happiness and youthful memories from days gone by.

See you in 2017. Thank you.
