Star Trek Model Kits: 1:350 TOS – To be or not to be? That is the question…

Believe me when I say… “We hear you.” I keep seeing the question coming in and being asked through our website, facebook and on the message boards. Will we or won’t we add a 1:350 scale TOS U.S.S. Enterprise to our lineup of Star Trek model kits? The answer right now is we are talking it through. We in the creative team are doing what we can to make it happen. For right now, all I can say is…

Nothing is official until we say it is despite what others might say, believe or think. We will make a final and formal announcement one way or another at Wonderfest in May. I hope to walk out of the place alive regardless of what that announcement might be.

Please note: Just to be perfectly clear, the red background is not indicative of anything… just my sick attempt at humor.

I love it! I must have the same WARP-ed sense of humor. I always loved how when you beamed down to a planet if your name wasn’t Kirk, Spock or Bones there was a good chance your stuff wasn’t comin back!
…And if your shirt was RED??? You KNEW you were lookin for work in the morning!

Forget the guys who say they hate this enterprise, you know a percentage of them will buy this kit anyway! There’s plenty people that want this kit…ENERGISE!!!

  2. Opus_Penguin says:

Thanks for the update. Hopefully this is a go!

  3. talondigital says:

I really hope it gets made, but if it doesn’t, I promise not to kill you.

  4. phicks says:

Jamie – You forgot to also not really say anything definitive about the 2009 movie Enterprise. 😉

  5. JamieH says:

phicks- another matter completely. We’ll say something about that when we can.

  6. ClubTepes says:

    Hopefully its positive Jamie.
While not committing to an answer in this update, it is good to hear something.

BTW: Weren’t your guys shirts red last year?
I’d suggest like to suggest a different color for this year regardless of the answer. 🙂

I hope that those with the purse strings see the possibilities of this kit and the interest that it has generated recently and over the years.

I don’t see the reason for the debate on whether to make or not make the kit. What was the overall response to the USS Enterprise 1/350 TMP? Based on the answer to that question you should have a definitive direction on how to proceed.

But my answer is “HECK YEAH! DO IT ALREADY!!!”

  8. avianca757 says:

And one other thing, please have the model have the running swirling lights on the warp nacelles.

May you live long and prosper!

  9. PerfesserCoffee says:

The TOS 1701 is the only real Enterprise for me! I’ve got two ordered already. I hope you can follow through on this project. Considering the longevity of earlier 1701 kits, I don’t know how you can go wrong.

  10. saavik001 says:

Hopefully this model wil be made… Any chance of a 1/350 version of the Klingon Cruiser from Star Trek:The Motion Picture? Something a lot more detailed then the one we got in 79′? Keep up the excellent work!

  11. nicktaximan says:

Got to agree with avianca757 and PerfesserCoffee! this kit would be a total winner! pretty Please?

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the original show’s 45th Anniversary than the release of this kit!

I’ve already ordered a case of four of the premier kit as a placeholder to get started. Once the kit is “officially” announced, I will order many more! With the first four, I plan on building the two pilot versions of the ship, the series production version, and a 1:4 scale “stage” model – with finished details only on the TV side of the ship, and the exposed wiring on the opposite side.

Can you tell that I can’t wait for this kit to be released? 🙂

    ACE

P.S. Thanks for all of the repops of the classic kits. I enjoy them all!

I just don’t see how this kit wouldn’t make financial sense. Sure, it’s big and complex, but when Tom Lowe owned PL, it managed the 1/350 refit, which seemed to do quite well. Some retailers reported it was a bigger draw than the 1/1000 refit which you issued a year ago. The original series ship is the ship a LOT of modelers cut their teeth on, and those modelers now have money ….

  14. 67firebird says:

Throw in a nice lighting kit and I don’t see how you could fail.

  15. jamesironwolf says:

I agree , i don’t see how this won’t do well. Not if it’s done as well as the 350 refit was. Which i have no doubt you all will do as well or better with it. Only reason i can think of not to is the number of sales on my end, i have one 350 NX-01, one 350 refit, 2 350 birds of prey. But i have 3 or 4 of each of the 1000 scale kits. I really hope to see the 350 TOS enterprise , besides there is still a large open spot on my wall between the NX-01 and the NCC-1701A. But i guess i can move them around and get a 350 enterprise aircraft carrier to fill the spot. Really would like to fill the spot with a 350 tos enterprise though. But i agree with the others. the answer is simple. check the sales figures for the 350 refit and see if those in charge feel it’s worth it.

While I would like to see a 350th TOS Enterprise, it probably would be out of my budget. Would have to come in under $70ish to be viable. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t try to save up for it but still trying to get a Millennium Falcon and C-57D plus you guys keep releasing other stuff I want. Arrgh!

Have liked the 1000 scale kits and wouldn’t mind a 3 in 1 version for Reliant/Bozeman/Saratoga as well as a TOS Romulan BOP.

Anyway, keep the kits coming. I will keep trying to buy them and looks like there are plenty of others to get those I can’t.

  17. eimb1999 says:

Thanks for letting us all know the score Jamie. We all like to know what’s going on when it’s known for sure. Communication is everything. I obviously hope that the kit is going to be a “go”, but if not, well, we still love you for the stuff you are producing. There are still a lot of unreleased kits we’d love to see done and hopefully they will get the improvement treatments you have been doing with the other kits. You’ve certainly been giving us better value for the kits than all previous releases. I am a big fan of the landing gear for the BOP model, and the corrections to all the other kits!

“Nothing is official until we say it is” so said the company that announced the Akira kit and the 2009 Enterprise. Sorry I am not going to get my hopes up again for any new kits. It is really lame to announce new kits and even get as far as pre-orders only to go all silent on the subject and then just say oh yeah we are not pursuing that anymore. So for what ever reason if you are even thinking of doing this 350 E then I suggest you actually show up at Wonderfest with the kit ready for sale and not some empty promise and pretty box art paintings. Sorry I had to go there.

  19. Bats says:

Boyuhhuh, Keep in mind many things can happen between the announcement and the actual production of a kit. The liscensor could pull out, production cost could turn out to be too high to make the investment back, you just never know. The situation could well be considered “lame” and you might feel like they dangled a carrot in front of your nose to string you along.

Could the situation have been handled better? Maybe. But sometimes in life decisions are made for you. Moreover, sometimes decisions are made for you that you don’t like. That’s life. There are a couple kits that i’m personally waiting for, and a couple that i’ve already waited for. Some made it to production, some didn’t. Some will make it others won’t. I will probably be upset myself if some of them don’t make it to light.

However, I know for a fact I will appreciate this company for the kits that DO make it, and i’ll appreciate this company more for keeping me informed of the why’s and wherefore’s of the kits that don’t. PL isn’t the only manufacturer to ever pull out of a project at the last minute. They ARE however, the only company that’s ever cared enough about it’s customer base to tell them why. They don’t have to, but they do. Isn’t it better to know right up front than have to write a letter and wait for a response that may never come, or a form letter thanking you for your interest in thier kits?

  20. ussgalactica says:

If I remember right it’s somewhere in the blog archive explaining what happened with the Akira model. The plans got released too soon on the net and well before they had anything viable to show for it and then lots of other things went wrong to boot. Again if I remember right the words chosen were ‘trying to run before we could crawl.’ So PL learned a hard lesson and focussed on their re issues and Enterprise models. Also for those with an eye on the Akira I do believe that same blog stated that the guys may well try again in 2012…

As it stands I think this may be a worthwihile kit to produce. I don’t really have the space for 1/350 TOS considering I am struggling to fit 2 1/350 Movie jobs into my room at home but I would certainly be interested in seeing what you guys can come up with considering the interior sections provided with the Movies ones!

  21. 2MUCHFUN says:

It would be so awesome to have the 1/350th TOS. I have been working on the 22 inch cut away and in the back of my mind I keep thinking “man, if that big one comes out this guy is going back on the shelf!!!”

There are loads of us out there who have been waiting for the TOS enterprise since the movie version came out. PLEASE PLEASE MAKE IT HAPPEN!
